Reuters' Ilaina Jonas writes: US banks increased lending for commercial real estate and apartment buildings for the first time in nearly two years in the fourth quarter of 2011, another sign of confidence in the improving economy. Banks expanded their lending by $5 billion, with the bigger, healthier banks leading the way, according to a report released by Chandan Economics, which tracks real estate bank lending.
